Vampire Lovers (1970)
Rating:
This is one of the better Gothic Horror films from England's famous Hammer Studios. Based on the story "Carmilla" by J. Sheridan LeFanu, Ingrid Pitt stars as the vampire Carmilla who enamors the daughter of a noble European family. Slower paced than most modern films, "The Vampire Lovers" is still excellent for its sets, costumes, and the excellent acting of Peter Cushing and Ingrid Pitt. Considering the slower pacing and the *very bad* editing of the American version, I only give the film three stars. Nearly all Hammer aficionados say that, in its uncut version, "The Vampire Lovers" is a fantastic film. Unfortunately, obtaining an uncut version here in America is almost impossible and I have yet to see it. Be warned: The tape sold by most video stores is the American version. Still, "The Vampire Lovers" is a great film and it's better to have a hacked up version than none at all.
